Today is a big day for Cassady K Photography! Today is the 5 year anniversary of Cassady K Photography officially becoming official! 5 YEARS! I’m so excited to have had my little business for so long!

I actually started shooting weddings and portraits 2 years before I turned it into a business. I was fresh out of Penn State and working as an office assistant just trying to make my car and loan payments. (So thankful those days are over!) A couple of my coworkers were so sweet and actually asked me to shoot their weddings or do family sessions. Oh my gosh I was so nervous! I had a used Nikon D70 that I won the opportunity to buy in a lottery from Penn State’s newspaper. My parents bought me the camera and a used lens as a graduation gift. I used what was left of my student loans to buy one more used lens. Thank goodness Ben knew something about cameras from his dad so he helped me pick out the lenses at the cheapest price. I literally used that Nikon D70 until it died on me. And I edited all of those images one at a time on Photoshop RAW. It took me 6 months to deliver that first wedding to my coworker. They really took a gamble and were very patient!

Ben actually used the fact that I needed a new camera as the way to propose to me. haha He again helped me pick out my new camera and had it delivered to him in eastern PA because, “the sales tax was cheaper.” I don’t know if that was true, but I would have done anything to save a buck. When he visited me in Pittsburgh he brought my brand new D7000 and mentioned that we should go to Mt. Washington so I could take pictures of the whole city. Well it didn’t take any convincing for me to start taking pictures so off we went. And that’s where he proposed 🙂

We were married in 2012 and I moved to New York. In 2013 I was continuing to shoot a couple weddings each year and now it was for couples that I didn’t previously know so Ben thought it was time to make Cassady K Photography a business. Ahhh! I was so nervous and excited to make it official. I can still remember signing all the paper work… Ben is my secretary in the company hahaha.

It’s just amazing to see how things have changed in my business over the past 5 years. I went full-time with my business, upgraded to Nikon D750 cameras and a lot more lenses, I edit so much faster in Lightroom, I’ve learned so much about shooting, I second shoot for other photographers, I got my own office when we moved, and I have an editor that helps me keep up with all of my images.

I am so thankful to everyone that has given me a chance to document their lives over the past 5 years! I get nervous before shoots because I don’t take lightly that I document important days in peoples’ lives. But I love doing it! I am also so thankful for having such a supportive husband that allows me to really live my dream and work from home.
